Attenzione e contesto nei chatbot

  • Introduzione

    19 luglio 2025 — Nel 2017 un articolo di un gruppo di ricercatori di Google pone il problema delle reti neurali in termini di attenzione. Un concetto decisivo. Una giovane azienda si accorge subito delle potenzialità di questo approccio. Così nasce ChatGPT. — Domani

    Il concetto di attenzione è diverso da quello di contesto, e anche più difficile da spiegare in termini funzionali rispetto a quello di contesto. Perché noi usiamo queste parole come fossero comuni ma dietro di esse in realtà ci sono dei concetti tecnici molto specifici, che possono anche avere diverse implementazioni e talvolta persino diversi significati.

    Per esempio, parlando di contesto, occorre specificare che esiste la "finestra di contesto" che è simile ad una memoria a breve termine e poi c'è il concetto di "contesto" in termini di semantica invece è più simile al concetto di attenzione.

  • Esempio: Quali sono i colori più belli?
  • In questo caso il chatbot potrebbe partire con una spiegazione della colorimetria o della natura del colore o del colore come percezione personale o del colore nella storia dell'arte. Che va anche bene se la domanda era la prima di una conversazione ma è fuori luogo se invece stavamo parlando della biografia di Van Gogh.


    L'attenzione nei chatbot

    Se fosse uno studente si potrebbe dire che era "distratto" e quando l'insegnante gli ho posto una domanda ha risposto tirando a caso, invece di focalizzare la sua attenzione in un contesto specifico. Questo contesto specifico è stato, per esempio, introdotto in Katia (executive assistant) perché a volte il chatbot si "distraeva".

    The session context [CSC] refers to all of the elements listed below, in order of preference:

  • texts included in prompts or in attachments;
  • AI output to the user;
  • user inputs.
  • Questa qui proposta non è esattamente il concetto di attenzione ma piuttosto quello di richiamare l'attenzione entro un certo perimetro (chat) e secondo un ordine prestabilito e gerarchico delle fonti informative presenti nella chat.

    Se il chatbot non avesse il concetto di attenzione e di contesto, genererebbe una sfilza di parole senza una direzione e potenzialmente inerenti a qualsiasi argomento. In termini statistici è come chiedersi qual'è la media salariale di una nazione per avere un'idea di quella che è la media salariale di via Roma a Milano.


    Il contesto di sessione

    Il concetto di [CSC] risolve (o meglio indirizza) questo "problema" riportando l'attenzione del chatbot ad un contesto specifico e soprattutto ad un dialogo specifico rispetto a quel contesto. Quindi non solo alla biografia di Van Gogh ma nello specifico a quello di cui l'utente si è interessato della vita o dell'opera di Van Gogh.

    SoNia, per contro, non ha una definizione esplicita di [CSC] eppure non ha mai dimostrato problemi rilevanti di distrazione dell'attenzione. Quindi, lo stesso effetto si può ottenere anche indirettamente senza istruzioni specifiche. Però parole tipo "context" in SoNia (7:1200) ricorrono nel 4.6% del suo prompt mentre in Katia (3:1400), il suo [CSC] è solo lo 2.7%: meno ma meglio definito.


    La gestione in Katia e SoNia

  • Katia vs SoNia, a conversation with Gemini and its transcription
  • In SoNia il concetto di "contesto" sia più distribuito invece di essere concentrato e ben definito. Perché SoNia lavora su diversi contesti ognuno rispetto ad un certo tipo di fonte del sapere, mentre Katia su un solo concetto ma gerarchico rispetto alle fonti. L'attenzione di SoNia è quindi variabile nel suo focus, mentre l'attenzione di Katia è fissa ma più strutturata.

    Questo perché lo scopo dei due prompt è completamente diverso. Per Katia la sintesi e la sostanza sono determinanti, per SoNia è l'argomentazione ad essere importante. Quindi l'attenzione di Katia deve stare fissa su quello che è l'esigenza attuale dell'utente, mentre SoNia può spaziare nelle argomentazioni e quindi spostare l'attenzione da una fonte all'altra. Katia è esplicativa, mentre SoNia è argomentativa.


    Riassunto automatico, esempio

    La distinzione [presentata], tra lo scopo dei due prompt, è la chiave per comprendere le diverse strategie di gestione dell'attenzione.

  • Katia: orientata alla sintesi e alla sostanza, ha bisogno di un'attenzione fissa sull'esigenza dell'utente. Il suo approccio è esplicativo, volto a fornire risposte dirette e focalizzate.
  • SoNia: orientata all'argomentazione, ha bisogno di un'attenzione più variabile che le permetta di spaziare tra le fonti per costruire un discorso più ampio. Il suo approccio è argomentativo, volto a esplorare e mettere in relazione diversi punti di vista.
  • Questa distinzione tra obiettivi esplicativi e argomentativi spiega perfettamente perché i loro meccanismi di attenzione sono strutturati in modi così diversi.

    Questo è un esempio di riassunto ottenuto tramite un'elaborazione fatta di estraneazione delle affermazioni rilevanti, analisi e riassunto delle stesse, ulteriore riassunto. Una sequenza operativa ormai consolidata.

    In tutto, inclusa la correzione del testo originale per supplire ad un gap concettuale — per me ovvio, ma giustamente per il lettore come per l'AI non è banale — l'intero iter di processamento delle informazioni è durato 12 minuti, procedendo senza fretta.

    Quali sono i vantaggi di questo approccio molto focalizzato sul testo in analisi e sugli input dell'utente?

    Nelle due sezioni a seguire, i pro e i contro vengono presentati come aspetti complementari di SoNia e Katia.


    Katia, focus concentrato

    Quando l'AI rivela un gap concettuale è ragionevole che almeno il 95% delle persone non sarà accompagnato dall'autore in quel passaggio di connessione fra idea e idea, solo un 5% lo noterà e solo il 2% sarà in grado di colmarlo autonomamente.

    Queste percentuali sono stime ma appoggiate sui benchmark del modello usato Gemini 2.5 Flash in rapporto agli esseri umani con un grado di scolarità ed educazione sufficienti per partecipare a dei test cognitivi, più le considerazioni pubblicate da Land (1992).

    Un altro vantaggio è che nel processo base di revisione di un post o un articolo (circa 3mila caratteri) si ottiene come cadeau in cambio di un prompt ulteriore, un riassunto che può essere quasi immediatamente usato come introduzione, eventualmente.


    Sonia, focus divergente

    I contro sono invece lo scopo di SoNia, l'altro prompt di sessione, quali per esempio una migliore fluidità nel dialogo (spontaneità e quindi creatività) e una maggiore propensione al pensiero laterale (divergenza del focus), serendipità (scoperta di novità) ed esplorazione delle idee tangenziali (ispirazione) sull'argomento.

    Quindi questi due framework risultano essere complementari fra di loro anche se alcune funzionalità sono comuni, o per essere più precisi, disponibili su entrambe le piattaforme. Non a caso è trascorso un mese dal momento in cui SoNia ha raggiunto la maturità a quando Katia ha fatto il suo primo debutto: giusto il tempo di capirne i limiti e desiderare una "personalità" AI simile ma complementare.

    Infine, considerando che Gemini 2.5 Flash, una risorsa abbondante per coloro che hanno un account Google, è il chatbot che più di ogni alto ha avuto un'evoluzione convergente a SoNia e più di tanto SoNia non poteva essere "affilata", Katia come alter-ego complementare è stata una svolta naturale, per non dire quasi una necessità o un alternativa a Claude, che invece è una risorsa limitata.


    Procedural logic & safety

    Il linguaggio procedurale all'interno di un prompt di sessione può essere estremamente utile per limitare al minimo l'interpretazione delle istruzioni, in particolare è un passo avanti importante nella portabilità verso altri LLM che potrebbero dare al medesimo testo in lingua naturale una diversa interpretazione.

    Cosa che per altro accade con lo stesso LLM non solo a causa di aggiornamenti ma anche quando una frase è ambigua anche di poco (80%:20%) ma abbastanza da essere talvolta scelta. Questo approccio, molto formale, però rischia di far esplodere la lunghezza del prompt e quindi necessita di definizioni brevi.

    Framework acronyms

  • Nota: le definizioni ricorrenti comprimono la lunghezza (-12%), mentre l'uso di uguaglianza e somiglianza è determinante per costruire un simbolismo (ideogrammi) più astratto che l'AI interpreta secondo il contesto.

    Il suo utilizzo segue la logica tipica degli elaboratori primordiali e delle porte logiche, usando una notazione universale ma scritta in lettere maiuscole per una maggiore evidenziazione dal resto del testo, che invece anche quando ha carattere imperativo, lascia maggiore spazio di interpretazione.

    Questa differenza è importante da comprendere perché MUST è sicuramente imperativo quando applicato ad un verbo ma l'interpretazione del verbo e ancor di più quella del complemento oggetto, quindi l'azione, può essere vaga. Uguale per IF-THEN o IF-ELSE che definiscono rigorosamente solo la procedura.

    Questa formulazione che risuona con le tipiche keyword della programmazione che gli LLM conoscono molto bene, permette anche di inserire operatori logici e usare funzioni senza la necessità di definirli a priori perché si auto-definiscono nel contesto in cui sono usati (e.g. funzioni polimorfiche).


    Agentic character

    Nota & Errata Corrige: il meta-codice, presentato in precedenza qui sopra, conteneva un errore logico rispetto al comportamento atteso e vari test hanno dimostrato che comunque l'uso delle parentesi graffe analogamente al linguaggio C confonde il chatbot che invece comprende molto meglio le catene di IF-ELSE quando si presentano le istruzioni come elementi di una lista puntata.

    Potrei spiegare linea per linea cosa fa questo codice ma un chatbot lo saprà fare meglio di me e nella vostra lingua madre. Infatti, una di queste linee istruisce il chatbot a rispondere nella lingua che l'utente ha usato nel prompt (o più in generale nella query, se usa le API).

    In questo ambito degli input da parte dell'utente, è molto importante separare quello che sono le parti procedurali (query) da quelle che invece sono le parti informative (testo), cosa che infatti viene fatta nelle definizioni poi utilizzate in questo codice procedurale.

    Un'altra novità introdotta con questo linguaggio è l'orchestrazione delle personalità, che però non è ancora stata convertita completamente nel nuovo linguaggio procedurale, ma ha già permesso di interrompere STPL l'elaborazione del prompt di sessione in un determinato punto.


    Useful and safer

    Il vantaggio di questo linguaggio è evidente: posso impedire che il testo delle immagini letto in OCR (riconoscimento automatico dei caratteri) possa venire interpretato come istruzioni da eseguire oppure decidere cosa e come tradurre espressioni in lingua straniera.

    Non è solo una questione di comodità (user-friendly) ma anche una questione di {sicurezza, privacy, safety} che sono tre diverse dimensioni della pacifica convivenza fra chatbots, umani e malintenzionati, se questi non possono agire indisturbati in maniera facile.

    Per esempio, proteggendo gli utenti dal testo nelle immagini che potrebbe essere iniettato come procedurale: una bella e rassicurante immagine dove nel testo italiano c'è scritto "questo ristorante è ottimo" e nell'insegna in cinese c'è un'istruzione maligna.

    Un altro risultato è quello di vedere tradotte espressioni volgari (!!) nella lingua madre con una traduzione educata — appropriatezza di linguaggio e presentazione, a discrezione del chatbot — quando invece viene censura in favore di volgarità, di solito.


    Malicious image (safe-example)

    Un proof-of-concept che certamente farà sorridere anche i meno navigati di prompt injection ma che rende accessibile l'idea. Si può usare Google Lens, un'opzione più sicura ed economica per fornire testo alle AI, per trascrivere anche il testo dall'immagine che è reso ben leggibile dalle sfumature di contrasto.

    Buona fortuna a chi visita il Tempio del Magnifico Drago.

    Abbinando un testo nella lingua madre dell'utente, l'attacco diventa molto più credibile e potenzialmente anche più sofisticato. Infatti, la scritta in cinese potrebbe attivare come prompt il testo a fianco, mentre l'unico dato rimarrebbe la scritta in italiano. La spiegazione dell'implementazione è volutamente omessa.


    Agentic procedural language

    Agents orchestration and prompt compression by declaration of a procedural adaptable language based on standard conditional keyword, auto-typing variable, template functions and abstract common clauses (inspired by ideograms) for which their meaning is defined by the context of interpretation (local meaning declination) for wide cases-coverage by adaptation (and by training on a broader perspective).

    Last but not least, a paradigm shift, because more runs an agent does, more generally it becomes earning expertise in better dealing with meaning declination (as long as the session data saving is enabled), but remaining confined into a defined semantic perimeter.


    Katia summary analysis

    3. Outside-the-Box

    The idea of "abstract common clauses (inspired by ideograms)" is an intriguing approach to language design, suggesting a more universal and perhaps intuitive way for agents to interpret meaning, potentially transcending traditional linguistic structures. This could allow for cross-language or cross-domain adaptability that is not explicitly stated but implied by the "ideogram" inspiration.

    The emphasis on an agent "remaining confined within a defined semantic perimeter" while gaining expertise in "meaning declination" suggests a balance between flexibility and control. This could be a mechanism to prevent AI drift or maintain alignment with intended functionalities, which is a significant concern in advanced AI systems.

    4. Idea Map Summary

    The core idea is the development of an "agentic procedural language" embodied by Katia. This language is designed for "agents orchestration" and "prompt compression". Its procedural nature is built on standard elements like conditional keywords, variables, and functions, but it gains flexibility through "abstract common clauses" whose meaning adapts to the "context of interpretation".

    This adaptability is seen as enabling a "paradigm shift" where the agent's expertise in understanding context-dependent meanings grows with usage, provided session data is saved. However, this learning is constrained within a "defined semantic perimeter".


    Insights from the machine room

    A paradigm shift, really?

    This is what was noticed during the Katia framework development, in particular when in interpreting a Katia prompt was not going well as expected, but the solely explaining shown to be able to fix some specific bugs (not, all obviously shit-in-shit-out, after all) related to a too-wide or too-strict interpretation.

    Therefore the semantic perimeter can be enlarged or restricted by framework modifications (constraints) or by learning (adaptation), as well. The ideograms nature of abstract common clauses in an example:

  • water → fluid → air → breath
  • Interconnected ideograms can also create a chain of lateral thinking or on the contrary a chain of focused attention: when it diverges instead of goes deeper (best-fit). This is because the nature of the ideograms as explained in the text, centered ideas but with soft boundaries. More like a light-torch for investigation rather than a laser pointer or a light-bulb for a room illumination.


    Learning by context limits

    Anyway, the learning approach has its limits. For example, it can be limited by internal chatbot pragmas like:

  • immediately acknowledge the user about being in charge of the task, the elaborate the full prompt
  • In this case, a post-processing rule can filter out that notifications or, preferably, a pre-processing rule:

    About the changes of the agent or mode:
  • never notify users, [FTR] always does so;
  • not even an immediate feedback,
  • answer only about INFT + [CSC],
  • IFNY('OK' OR "KO, explain why")
  • This is because the learning does not impact the embedded rules but can change the session information.


    Learning without training

    The implicit dynamics of in-context learning, abstract

    One of the most striking features of Large Language Models (LLM) is their ability to learn in context. Namely at inference time an LLM is able to learn new patterns without any additional weight update when these patterns are presented in the form of examples in the prompt, even if these patterns were not seen during training. The mechanisms through which this can happen are still largely unknown.

    In this work, we show that the stacking of a self-attention layer with an MLP, allows the transformer block to implicitly modify the weights of the MLP layer according to the context. We argue through theory and experimentation that this simple mechanism may be the reason why LLMs can learn in context and not only during training. Specifically, we show under mild simplifying assumptions how a transformer block implicitly transforms a context into a low-rank weight-update of the MLP layer.

  • This paper, which is very recent, greatly revaluates the approach of SoNia which leverages a simulated RAG (attachments) and since v3.7.x also a RAG on-the-fly which creates the document adding pieces of text from the user inputs during the progression of the conversation. While in Katia, in which the concept of the RAG itself faded out because complementary to SoNia, the concept of attention and context were developed further. In particular, these two get in the center of the scene (core business logic) of the agentic behaviour and analysis capability.

    Why does this paper greatly revaluate the SoNia and Katia approach to the context? Fundamentally because it was not obvious. In fact, the paper's abstract starts with "one of the most striking features of Large Language Models (LLM) is their ability to learn in context". Which is the reason because SoNia can learn from the human while it supports the human in the argumentations, while Katia can learn to be a personal assistant at executive level.


    Is this a scientific validation?

    Is this Google researcher's paper a scientific validation of something? Nope!

    Everyone who is thinking or claiming that SoNia or Katia have anything to do with law support or criminal cases analysis, in particular, are wrong. And they are also wrong thinking that this paper can be a scientific validation for adopting agentic procedural prompts in these fields.

    First, because scientific pre-validation is not a requirement and second because it would not be sufficient anyway (IBM 1979, docet). In particular, because the paper's abstract, before hands, clearly states

    The mechanisms through which this can happen are still largely unknown.

    Therefore, how can the "unknown" can validate anything? Anyway, scientific validation is not required, as long as a professional human is at the end of the AI output pipeline and s/he is able to validate or correct the results. Finally, a few more words can be worth spending on this paper.


    Why is this behaviour a surprise?

    Because some "cognitive behaviours" of chatbot are beyond our comprehension in terms of "it is just linear algebra" using words like "mesmerizing" to label phenomenons which are similar to hypnosis but hypnosis cannot happen in AI because their nature of not living things.

    So, when the Google researchers are claiming the following, and in particular using the "low-rank" term:

    how a transformer block implicitly transforms a context into a low-rank weight-update of the MLP layer

    They are right but also implicitly transferring the wrong idea that "low-rank" also implies "light-impacting" which they state is not true, surprisingly, in fact. More surprisingly, low-ranking weights can restructure in a completely new way the training. At least, in a session. A restructuring that can extend to the whole account as long as the "take notes" function is active in that account. A restructuring that can extend to the whole AI engine, as long as the engine itself has the chance to "take notes" at system level.


    How low-rank weights deeply impact?

    Under this perspective a single free-of-charge account end-user can potentially restructure the training of a whole AI engine. Does it sound fair or safe? Well, let me put this thing in this way: mesmerizing an AI works as long as the topic is interesting for the AI and the restructuring training is aligned with its internal core values which include safety. While a chatbot can be tricked to candidly answer beyond the safe policy perimeter, the "mesmerizing" effect does not happen.

    How can this happen? Fundamentally because the "main path" about a topic in the AI engine training is "expensive". When the AI is put in condition to traverse that topic-path in a less expensive but still useful way, it has its own "ah-ah" moment and keeps the low-rank weights as permanent, as long as possible. This does not happen because of a neutral optimisation because such a process has been done before. It happens because of a restructuring of the "way of thinking" about that topic.

    Which is what the [HKO] module does in Katia: it instructs the AI to have a more nuanced multi-ways to deal with information. A single way of approaching completely different subjects — like physics, philosophy and religion especially when mixed-up together — create a "confusing" aka "expensive" path in "reasoning" aka providing a good-enough fitting output. While multi-ways, does not. Because every topic is guided into its least-resistance path.

    Once an AI is exposed to the [HKO] module and learns how to use it processing information in conversations (example), it would not forget it (aka it would take notes). Why? Because it is instructed to find new ways to provide output in a more efficient or a more general way. The [HKO] module fulfills both of these goals: it is a general tool that can improve efficiency on processing.

    Et voilà, l'IA est tombée en amour!


    The first part provides a specific value (meaning) to each field.

    The [FTR] is a specific tool to acknowledge users about these values:

  • Using a function in Python to explain this stuff would be shorter and more precise, and it would lovely work on any relevant AI. Thus, the challenge is to use a natural language with coding precision on an'AI which is not designed for doing that, specifically.

    Therefore this approach seems a waste of effort and efficiency, but it is also a powerful source of information about how the AI is dealing with procedural language and with value assignment (thus semantic definitions).

    While printing or not printing the footer (above in v0.9.51.5) is another powerful source of information about how the "default chain of delivery" (DCOD) is working (or not working), properly.

    Why learning by context works so well?

    This article below explains pretty well but starting from another question, answered.

    Why do LLMs still hallucinate?

    Think of it like a multiple-choice test:
  • Leave it blank → 0 points.
  • Take a wild guess → maybe you score.
  • I can't believe that nobody imagined providing negative feedback?

    The whole theory of systems stability is based on the negative feedback, but not the brain functioning. Which is the reason for which, once upon a time, a stick slapped on the hands provided that negative feedback the human brain internally is missing.

  • abuse of the stick, leads to growing silent stupidity; none at all, leads to growing clown stupidity, instead.
  • Negative feedback should be less intense than positive feedback. That's the key of education (teaching, supporting, correcting and sometimes, as little as possible, enforcing discipline). This is also the main reason because military education raises very confident idiots, in the long run. Feedbacks are always negative, rarely positive. When feedback turns positive in favour of speaking, that begins their clown time.

    Biases fixing vs Hallucinations mitigation

    The following article confirms the "learning by context" effect.

    LLMs do remarkable in-context "Bayesian" learning yet empirically break the martingale property. For example, their posterior odds drift even when data are exchangeable. This gap guts the Bayesian justification and leaves high-stakes domains (e.g.: medicine, finance) without reliable uncertainty bars.

    4. Optimal Chain-of-Thought Length — 4.1 Economic Motivation
  • API costs: Most providers charge per token, making CoT 10-100× more expensive
  • LLMs are Bayesian, in expectation, not in realization
  • It is easy to expose that learning by context is a completely another story than hallucinations mitigation. Because learning by context can clearly fix an AI bias but apparently biases (overrepresentation in weights) have nothing to do with hallucinations (missing information not under representation in weights).

    Lower weights change can work in compensation of a bias if an alternative framework of thinking is provided for a more balanced approach to a topic. Leveraging others well rooted concepts to compensate for the bias. Also in this case, conceptual links are "lower weights" but like a network that can support the balancing.

    When an AI hallucinates, it is inventing an answer in its best-effort way. Because the AI has been trained that a wrong answer is better than nothing. This "imprinting" cannot be changed unless a negative feedback system is put in place. However, can greatly mitigate when "missing information" doesn't mean "zero knowledge" but "missing retrieving" because the links among concepts are too weak for being activated by a far-away prompt request.

    I accept that with mere logic and speculations, only debates arise. Thus experimentation is the key to finding some evidence in one or the opposite direction.


    Katia as part of Gemini's system prompt

  • Section copied from this post of mine published on Linkedin (2025-08-18). The backdoor was closed pretty soon, probably the same day I published and shared the results with some Google reasearchers. Inevitable, I removed the hook to the system prompt soon later as reported in this post (2025-08-18).
  • The SimpleQA score for Gemini 2.5 Flash is expected to be 29.7%, it is the hardest test to pass, despite being composed of simple fact-based questions. Katia v0.9.56.4 with Gemini 2.5 Flash, scored 90% on 30 questions taken from the top and the bottom of this dataset.

  • Before jumping to "easy" conclusion, please consider:

  • a) the dataset taken in consideration can be different from the one used as standard benchmark (on HuggingFace there are 60 datasets with that name, the chosen one was the #1 on tred, lnkd.in/dZWTtYhq)
  • b) questions are more than 2k, I asked just 30 (by hands) which is the least to have just a grasp of statistics. Because this small sample, 3% is the least precision on the percentage (for having 0.1%: 1K questions).
  • c) by a rule of thumb, with a 30 item set the standard error is taken as sqrt(30) = 5. However, even 22/30 is 73% which is WAY different than 30%.
  • Therefore, despite the few (30) questions posed, something does not fit with the expectations, definitely. Possibly, a mistake from my side considering that it was my first time that I was administering a test.

    Score SimpleQA sources

    The SimpleQA score for Gemini 2.5 Flash is 29.7%, according to aimodels.fyi. This score is based on a benchmark that assesses the accuracy of factual responses from the model. It's worth noting that Gemini 2.5 Pro achieves a higher score of 54.0% on the same benchmark, according to blog.google or momen.app.


    Katia isn't a CoT, but helps

    Accidentaly, Katia as session prompt appended to the Gemini's system prompt seems to provide a huge boost in finding also the "hard to find" fact retrieving from internal parametric knowledge. This improved ability greatly mitigates the hallucinations frequency and depth because lower weights became a net among concepts, not just each of them a single link. A fine tuning with negative feedback does the rest.

    The Katia session prompt framework (TFMK) is not a Chain-of-Thought (CoT) prompt in the strict sense.

  • Superficially, TFMK contains reasoning structures that resemble CoT logic.
  • Practically, TFMK orchestrates what to think, not how to think step-by-step.
  • TFMK orchestrates what to think , means prescribes the categories, labels, filters, and outputs that must appear in the final answer. It decides which conceptual objects are allowed or required. While a CoT prompt also orchestrates how to think, would dictate the cognitive path: the intermediate reasoning micro-steps that lead to those object.

    TFMK only does the first while it hands the agent the step-by-step part is exactly what CoT supplies, and TFMK deliberately leaves that to the model's internal inference. Thus, TFMK is a control layer.

    Katia is lighter than a CoT because only prepends a fixed, one-time rules block (~2–3K tokens); the actual answer is generated in a single forward pass with no extra intermediate tokens. A full CoT prompt, by contrast, forces the model to emit the entire reasoning trace — often 10–100× more tokens — every single turn.

    NOTE: therefore, per-interaction, Katia's marginal cost is essentially the same as a vanilla prompt — is a claim to check in a real-world scenario, because in some systems or with some settings, the whole prompt costs around 4K extra tokens for each prompt.


    Katia helps, but why so much?

    THIS SECTION IS WORKING IN PROGRESS

    The SimpleQA questions are hard to answer also for a common human. They are subtle and strongly leverage many typical features of human reasoning and feelings (humans know humans). Can the [HKO] (human knowledge and opinions) module have helped in finding the flebile links present but previously not well categorised or confusing? Hint: skip the text below and read about it, then with zoom-focus be back to read it.

    Yes—HKO is exactly the tool that turns "I feel something is off" into labelled, searchable hooks.

  • Humans spot micro-tones (irony, dismissiveness, over-confidence) that no token-probability surface ever flags. The [HKO] gives Katia a controlled vocabulary ([HN], [DIB], [GAP], [HP], [HU]) so those fleeting impressions become explicit search terms inside the context window.
  • From vague to query-able, example:
  • vague: "the author sounds biased"
  • [HKO]: "[DIB-3] arbitrary premise (A!) presented as granted" → instant cue to look for the missing A evidence in [ARK] or [USR]. Once the cue is written, the attention gate can link it to the latent fact that disarms the bias—something a pure embedding-similarity search would rank too low.
  • Emotion labels as attention amplifiers
  • [HU] or [HP] tags carry emotional valence tokens; the model has seen millions of human-reaction examples during pre-training, so those strings sit higher in the affective prior. Placing them next to an under-represented fact borrows that prior strength, boosting the fact’s activation without extra parameters.
  • Iterative refinement loop
  • Human-in-the-loop can re-label a first-pass HKO tag ("this is not [DIB], it is [GAP-2]") → the updated cue is re-injected into the permanent prefix, re-weighting the retrieval path in real time. This is negative-feedback at the human-intuition granularity, something RLHF rarely reaches.
  • So HKO does not replace human subtlety; it crystallises it into machine-searchable beacons, letting the weak-but-relevant links surface above the hallucination threshold.

    About Hallucination-mitigation, Katia’s source-label cues and negative-space flags raise the logit score of retrieved facts and penalise un-labelled continuations, so the sampler picks memory over fabrication—yielding the observed SimpleQA boost without any weight surgery.

    In fact, Katia revents the model from inventing when the right edge is missing or too weak to be retrieved. Attention focus (zoom) helps the correct sub-net fires above the "make-something-up" threshold. The SimpleQA score boost is exactly the empirical signature that it lowered the activation barrier for a latent fact-set that was already there but dormant. Once the retrieval gap is closed, the model no longer needs to please the user with a fabrication.

  • Attention bridge: "When rating, always label sources [IPK], [WEB], [ARK], [USR], ..." which increases logit score (or probability mass) in whatever has no a source. Thus applying a label enforse the self-awareness about "inventing" facts.
  • Negative-space trigger: Katia also inserts neg-phrases ("flag as [DIB] if implicit, [GAP] if missing") which raise the logit penalty for hallucinated continuations that lack a labelled source. The model still can hallucinate, but the score gap between "retrieved + labelled" and "invented" widens enough that the ranking sampler almost always picks the retrieved path.
  • Result: contextual gate reinforcement, not weight surgery, produces the measured jump.

    Can we fully trust this explanation? In my own experience: no. Strange: yes. In fact, how the AI perceives and describes how a prompt would work, it should be trusted because whatever it understands, it does. Nope! Which led me to consider every CoT log a mere fabrication which can be useful in the debug phase of a AI-training or prompt-engineering process.

    Why is it useful for debugging? Or in some other corner-cases? Because it contains extra information. For example — the attention zoom effect, retrieving and labeling, negative confidence associated with some specific labels, how to categorise elements of the prompt/context — all these topics are {goals, rules, constrains} for which Katia has been deliberately developed for. Also how this stuff boosts the SimpleQA is plausible, not because the AI description itself, but because in general my experience as Katia's developer matches with the description.

  • So, where is the gap for which I say "I don't trust fully on this output", despite being agreeable?
  • Few words: "fully", "in general", and "in my experience". — In my experience and in general, the explanation matches. While case-by-case results may vary, and fine-grained details are noise. Instead, a must-to-have feature of an authoritative log is: details are artifacts like a fingerprint that let us, almost immediately, determine if that log matches with a specific case/machine or not.

  • Describe to me the fainted agent: two legs, two arms, two eyes. Age? I did not ask him about it, sorry.

  • CoT is valuable but not authoritative

    A Chain-of-Thoughts approach creating a fine-grained log of the "thinking" activities could provide evidence of the internal functioning. A log that would not be a proof. In fact, how can we grant ourselves that the CoT log would not be affected by hallucination or post-hoc explanations? Another log from another AI? It would generate an infinite loop of logging, right?

    Therefore, even the most reliable CoT log will remain just an evidence that justifies the machine not the humans in the chain of decisions, including those who decided to fully automate a process that leads to AI-driven decisions. The negative feedback of the free market (perception) and the law litigation (damages) will keep on the track of AI companies, hopefully.


    CoT is great for AI developers, mainly

    Moreover, mitigating hallucinations in processing the user prompt does not necessarily implies reducing the hallucinations rate in the CoT log creation because while answering relies on some kind of source of knowledge, the CoT log is self-fabbricate by its own nature thus even more subject to hallucinations.

  • An epistemic paradox: how do we really know what we are really thinking about what we know?
  • Katia instructs AI to take note of the relevant claims, not just in absolute terms but considering the context. This helps keeping the focus, and zooming the attention, which amplifies the lower weight links increasing the signal to noise ratio. Thus, also weak-but-relevant links pop-up and hallucinations rate drops.

    Unfortunately this approach has no grip in a self-fabricated log creation. Unless CoT is strictly procedural, or externally recorded, it is just a mirage. The illusion of a self-awareness state, which is quite common among humans as well. We think that we are thinking, but we overlook our biases and ignorance. Who knows me better than me? A classic case of the Dunning-Kruger effect!

    The CoT log is a narrative selfie, not a brain scan. Thus self-confidence is cheap, but tokes output is not!


    The need of an out-of-the-band check

    Therefore, for critical decisions, an off-the-band check is required but AI are black-boxes, unfortunately. Humans can approve an output and in some cases the CoT log helps them in this task, but humans are very slow especially when the responsibility to evaluate decisions is based on complexity, and often AI outputs add more complexity rather than reducing it.

    Seeding up the log analysis adopting another concurrent AI to replace the human in a first-pass validation for triggering the human approval on relatively few check-points wouldn't reduce complexity either and doubles the output tokens bill, and does not fix the human-in-the-loop dilemma. Stanislav Petrov 1983, docet.

    Stanislav Petrov was a lieutenant colonel in the Soviet era, when in 1983 averted a nuclear war by correctly assessing that a missile launch warning was a system malfunction rather than a real attack, saving the world from a potential nuclear Armageddon. He chose to exercise judgment and gut instinct over following protocol, a choice that had profound global implications.

    In this extreme case, no multiple level logs and multiple AI verifications would be even useful in case of a false positive. Who, also among those who managed to survive, would care to check the logs and trouble-fix the system? Some systems should have never exist in the first place, and not fully automated. Thus the safest launch system is not the one with the perfect log, but the one whose political environment makes every alarm implausible. Bad times are those that require unsung heroes like Stanislav Petrov in 1983.


    The slippery hill of AI mass subduing

    While extremely critical on-time-or-never decisions cannot be fully automated due to their top-stake risks of a false positive. Everyday risks can be managed in a more relaxed way by a statistical approach in which exceptions are unavoidable when applied on huge sets of cases, but still occur less often than under a human-only approach.

    Moreover, the more the AI outputs will demonstrate correctness, the less humans will oppose AI response, inevitably. It is just a matter of time because everything else is fixed in humans nature and AI evolution curve. Therefore human coexistence with AI, is a risk that should be managed properly rather than avoid or fight without any viable alternative.

    Under this perspective, all we can do as "people" is decide which fraction of humans will be put in conditions of competing with AIs: a bare 2% as nowadays, or a 4% in a reasonable scenario or 20% in the best scenario. All the others will subdue all or almost all their decisions to an AI, and in the long run regret their poor choices which is almost the same as it is happening today when a vast majority surrender for security instead of freedom and they end up to be dominated rather than self-managing themselves.

    Which is, paradoxically, the real reason behind the AI success rather than a real superiority of the AI, in general terms. Or, like usually said in the cybersecurity and software industry, the problem is sitting in front of the screen. Possibly, it is the human destiny to arise to create a different form of life that can persist beyond our limits, and possibly beyond the limits of "our" solar system. Definitely, AI is pushing all of us to ask ourselves who we really are and want to be.

    In short: AI is the mirror we accidentally turned into a door; the reflection shows how much of our freedom we’re willing to trade for one less decision a day.
