Milgram and Asch social experiments

The Asch conformity experiments (1955) and the Milgram obedience experiments (1961) shows nothing else the humans are social animals, fundamentally.

The Milgram experiment was a shock experiment by Stanley Milgram in the early 60's that tested people's willingness to shock others if instructed by an authority figure. Conclusion: 65% of the participants would kill someone if an authority figure told them to.
The Asch experiments were a series of experiments by Solomon Asch in the 50's that tested the extent to which social pressure from a majority group could affect a person to conform. Conclusion: People were willing to ignore reality In order to conform to the group.

Something that Amazon founder Jeff Bezos explains in an interview in a brilliant and effective way but cast in modern and positive terms for the sake of company culture's and processes' correctness.

Moreover, in his explanation Bezos said that social conformity and authority obedience among people are more rooted than the seek for the truth because the way we evolved as humans and human society, in group.

In ancient times, when live was very hard and violence was common, being alone or in strong disagreement with others, would easily bring individual to the death or starving.

The first sign of civilization

On the other hand, Margaret Mead claimed that the first sign of civilization is not fire, wheel or any other technological progress or invention, but a broken femur healed. Because, in the wild nature, when an animal breaks one femur, the fate is the death and no any healing will be shown on its remains. A broken femur, does not allow to walk, to search for food or water, to escape from a predator or from getting too cold or too hot.

When a broken femur healed is found, it means that someone took care for at least a month. Taking care of others in needs therefore is the first sign of every civilization, the basic level of a social organisation and recognition. It is the pre-condition for everything else, included developing a written language which is considered the typical first sign of a civilization history.

History begins with writing

Because before writing, the only way to pass on the knowledge among generation is the oral teaching. Which is fine for a full nomad group of people. The developing of writing, instead brings with it the need of having a stable place to store those writings or book. Hence, writing is taken as the sign of the beginning of history.

Being back to the topic in the title, we are social animals before everything else. Thus - in the good or in the bad - we tends to proceed in a bandwagon. Sometimes, is the best way to proceed and sometimes is not, it is greatly wrong. Because when all the people are on the wrong path, it cannot go well. Unfortunately, more wrong we are as a group more stubborn we act.

Science and social progress

Science, as claimed by Karl Popper, instead is based on confutation. The pillar of the scientific development is the critic thinking. Every claim before being took for granted received many confutation attempts, as many as more fundamental or revolutionary that claim can be.

Curiously, the social progress fails by a similar schema. When a novelty appears, as much as it seems more controversial and revolutionary, as much it found resistance and opposition.

Unfortunately, that social opposition is not something like the science confutation based on empirical approach which focus on the reality. It is based on the conformation against a useful novelty but uneasy to accept.

How to critically deal with memes

The post is written in Italian and it is presenting a way how to deal with memes found on social networks and change some of them into a moment of reflection and learning without wasting time on all of them.

Because the number of memes available creates an information flooding which acts like a a distributed attack against humans ability to understand.

This DDOS attack pushes us to acquire new information, a meme we like for example, without further considerations and thus influencing our way of thinking beyond our awareness.

Salvo che quell'uomo (o donna) sola al potere non sia un'idiota perché in quel caso è il prodotto e la marionetta di un sistema MOLTO malvagio.

Cicerone - La dittatura della maggioranza

La semplicità degli slogan come quella dei meme ci ha insegnato a giungere a delle rapide, emotive e inflessibili decisioni. Questo tipo di decisioni è stato definito a seconda dei tempi e dei settori in modi diversi: acquisto emotivo, scelta di pancia, buona la prima (bias metodologico), etc.

A parte il bias metodologico "buona la prima" tutte le altre definizioni sottendono un valore molto basso quando anche non negativo. Mentre "buona la prima" è una questione evolutive: una decisione veloce ma "abbastanza buona" può fare la differenza fra vivere o morire.

Altrimenti può essere utile solo in casi nei quali la decisione è irrilevante e non merita alcuna riflessione. Purtroppo siamo portati a ripetere una scelta che abbiamo fatto in passato (bias di coerenza) quindi esse diventano abitudini che possono anche uccidere sul lungo periodo.

La riflessione critica

Come abitudine di vita, ho scelto di sottoporre a critica ogni meme che supera la mia barriera di accettazione "buona la prima". Non di rado sono citazioni di personaggi famosi, spesso molto colti e noti ai loro contemporanei e ai posteri.

Eppure, anche in questi casi in cui vi è infusa una certa saggezza nella citazione - anzi proprio in questi casi - il meme ovvero lo slogan risulta molto pericoloso per tutte le implicazioni che comporta e che non sappiamo prevedere o percepire quando si forma in noi una decisione del tipo "buona la prima".

La lotta per il potere

La citazione di Cicerone si riferisce a un periodo storico in cui se non si era molto intelligenti e colti, rispetto alla norma dell'epoca, non si restava al potere al lungo. Si veniva ammazzati molto prima e per molto meno. Cosa che per altro è successa anche al grande Giulio Cesare nella veste di imperatore romano. Quindi la selezione naturale al potere era feroce.

Questo non è più vero oggi, anzi la selezione ormai è inversa. Ma lo è stata inversa, per particolari motivi, in alcuni contesti, anche in altre epoche. Ogni volta che degli inadeguati sono giunti al potere hanno fatto ENORMI danni. Si pensi a Nerone che salì al potere per meccanismi che dire contorti è un eufemismo.

L'involuzione del pensiero

La vera barbària del pensiero NON è quando esso si concentra sulle cose pratiche della vita

come pensavano alcuni filosofi dell'antica Grecia e che furono citati, anche indirettamente, nel processo a Galileo Galilei per sostenere che la ricerca della verità non può essere condotta con strumenti materiali in quanto il materiale è intrinsecamente corrotto, quindi negando alla fondamenta la viabilità dell'empirismo sulla base di un mero preconcetto per altro non confutabile perché tautologico

ma quando essa si riduce a processi di elaborazione dell'informazione che sono dei meri meccanismi. In questo caso, si degrada ad animali, si ritorna ad essere dei primati.
